Backup Utility
A Backup Utility
is a computer
program used to perform a complete backup of a file, data, database,
system or server. The backup utility
enables you to make an exact duplicate
of everything contained on the original
source. This software must also be used
to perform a recovery of the data
or system in the event of a disaster.
When looking at backup utilities there
are many things to consider. Many
software programs require you to hire
dedicated personnel to manage backups
and backup archives. However, some newer
backup and disaster recovery programs
allow you to schedule your backups and
leave it alone – basically, you set it
and forget it.
You should also look at the length of
time it will take to backup your systems
and data, the reliability of the
hardware on which your backup will be
stored and the experience of the
developers of the software.
Another issue to consider is that some
backup utilities will backup only to
tape, while others will backup to disk.
Some software use a file-by-file method
to backup. Other software will backup an
entire volume or drive.
Whatever backup utility you choose, you
should be certain that you are able to
perform a recovery of your data
or system in the event of a disaster.
